Some practical details about the Summer Campus

We hope that most of the questions raised by many of you will be answered. However, if you still have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Place and Time

The European Summer Campus will take place at the Physics and Engineering Department of the University of Strasbourg very close to the city-centre. Sunday the 20th of August and Monday morning are reserved for arrival.

The official language of the Summer Campus sessions will be English. Participants are expected to be able to communicate fluently in this language.

Transportation

VISA

No entrance-visa is required to enter France for citizens of most European countries. Please verify yourself sufficiently in advance, if a visa is necessary for you and inform yourself about the duration necessary to obtain one. Do apply before June 8th and inform the organisers early enough, if there might be a time problem to obtain a visa. All participants will receive an official invitation letter by the organizers.

How to get to Strasbourg

Useful information about Strasbourg and on how to get there can be found at http://www.strasbourg.eu/en/index.htm

Travel Expenses and Reimbursement

Within the tight limitations of our budget we can help individual students with their travel expenses, if their university was unable to contribute to your fare and the student makes a formal request.

Arrival

By train:

You arrive at the main station of Strasbourg. See plan_1 and plan_2 for the layout of the main station. Buy a single fare at the ticket machines, 1.70 Euro. The ticket machines are located directly on the platform.

Attention you have to validate the tram ticket on special machines BEFORE you get on the tram!! For the buses you have to validate your ticket inside the bus. It is important that you re-validate your ticket anytime you change tram or bus!!!

To get to the University: Take line C (yellow) direction "Esplanade". Exit at stop "Université" and walk to the Faculty of Physics and Engineering, 3 rue de l’Université as indicated on the map on our web site. See also “Transportation in Strasbourg".

By plane:

The main airport is in Entzheim. In order to get to Strasbourg, take the train from the airport to main station Strasbourg and from there, proceed by tram (see above). You have to buy the train ticket in the airport (at the end of the airport before going on the outside path that leads to the train platform).

There is a second airport close by, Baden-Baden airport in Germany, close to Karlsruhe.

A third possibility is the Airport in Basel-Mulhouse: http://www.euroairport.com/fr/

The forth possibility is the Frankfurt Airport, since Lufthansa has a shuttle service from there directly to Strasbourg.

By coach:

For coaches arriving at "Place de l'Etoile" you may take the tram line A (red) direction "Hautepierre" or tram D (green) "Rotonde" and change at station "Homme de Fer", to tram C (yellow) direction "Esplanade". Exit at stop "Université" and walk to the physics faculty "UFR Physique et Ingénierie ", 3 rue de l’Université as indicated on the map on our web site (30 m., left, 30 m., left, 30 m).
There is now the possibility to take the D line from "Etoile Bourse" towards "Aristide Briand", then change at "Landsberg" and take the C or E line (towards "Gare Centrale" or "Robertsau Boecklin", resp.) and exit at "Observatoire" or "Université".

Accommodation

All students of the Summer Campus will be accommodated at the FEC, “foyer de l'étudiant catholique” in the center of Strasbourg,17 Place St Etienne, nearby the university: http://www.fec-strasbourg.org/

The individual rooms are equipped with a shower, lavabo (washing basin) and toilette, refrigerator and small kitchen corner. Bedding etc will be provided. Bring a bar of soap and towel(s). If you plan to come a day earlier or to leave later, you might be able to stay at the University residence within some limits, however, you have to ask us well in advance, so we can make the reservation and you will be charged 22,- Euros per night.

Meals

Lunch will be served at the university restaurants close to the site of the Summer University. These restaurants can also be used in the evenings when there is no evening programme, see detailed programme. Tickets will be provided free of charge during the week.

Please let us know early if you are vegetarian or need special food. This is in particular important for the outings organised.

Normally it is quite warm in Summer. So take summer clothes, but also a sweater for the evening to sit outside. However we also have seen quite strong rain or thunderstorms at this time of the year, so please take something against rain.
