Soft Matter & Smart Materials
The European Summer School of the University of Strasbourg is a one-week meeting of training for post-docs, PhD students and Master students from all over Europe. Lectures on some of the most recent topics of importance in chemistry and physics are given by internationally renowned scientists.
The 2019 edition of the school is organized by the Faculty of Physics and Engineering of the University of Strasbourg together with the Institute of Physics of the University of Freiburg.
Scientific Program
The topic of the 2019 Summer School is related to soft matter and smart materials. Inspired by living systems, such materials are able to respond and adapt to their environment. This interdisciplinary field of research encompasses the chemical design of these materials as well as the physical rules that control their dynamics at various length and time scales. Recent advances to access artificial materials with the emergence of complex self-organizing properties will be discussed. The two partner universities are at the forefront of these research activities worldwide, and international experts will deliver lectures from their latest scientific endeavors. A visit of the Research Facilities at Freiburg University is scheduled.

The school is open to post-docs, PhD students, and Master students. A background in chemistry and physics is required.
The payment of 200 € is required to validate the registration to the summer school.
The University of Strasbourg will be in charge directly for the registration fees of UNISTRA-students (including PhD students).
Lectures will start on Monday morning, the 1st of July and will end on Friday evening, the 5th of July.

Validation of the Summer School
An attestation for successful participation at the summer school will be established on the basis of the active involvement in all the scientific activities of the school. The attestation may help to validate ECTS points at the home university and will be discussed in each case.
Housing and Transportation
Accommodation and most meals will be provided free of charge (included in the registration fees of 200€), transportation is in the responsibility of participants.

The School is funded by the French Excellence Initiative (IdEx), the Université franco-allemande (UFA), the Institut Charles Sadron, the Fédération de Recherche Matériaux et Nanosciences Grand Est (FRMNGE), the USIAS (Strasbourg) and FRIAS (Freiburg) Institutes for Advanced studies, and the IRTG “Soft Matter Science” between Freiburg, Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Basel. This support underlines the collaboration between the Universities and Research Institutions of the Upper Rhine Region. Besides the scientific program the participants will have the opportunity to explore the cultural and political heritage of the region Alsace and of Strasbourg which hosts the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.
