Some practical details concerning the Summer Campus

We hope that most of the questions raised by many of you will be answered. However, if you still have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Travel Expenses and Reimbursement

Within the tight limitations of our budget we can help individual students with their travel expenses, if a formal request is made by the student. In general we hope to be able to contribute in the order of 20-50 % to the cost of a second-class return trip by train or coach or an economy flight if necessary. Certain upper limits are however in place for each country. You will be informed individually by which amount we can help you. In order to reimburse you, please bring to Strasbourg the original bill and the tickets for bus and train, and, in case you arrive by plane, the paper slip (seat assignment) from your flight ticket. If your university was able to contribute to your fare, please bring a statement indicating the amount.

After receipt of your tickets etc., of which we will have to make copies (return fares), an administrative document is established. You will then be reimbursed by Thursday afternoon at the "caisse universitaire". Building 44 on campus map - Institut Le Bel, 4 rue Blaise Pascal.

Arrival

By train:

You arrive at the main station of Strasbourg. See plan_1 and plan_2 for the layout of the main station. Buy a single fare at the ticket machines, 1,30 Euro. The ticket machines are located directly on the platform of the train.

Attention you have to validate the tram ticket on special machines BEFORE you get on the tram!! For the busses you have to validate your ticket inside the bus. It is important that you have to revalidate your ticked anytime you change tram or bus!!!

To get to the University: Take line A (red) direction "Illkirch" or D (green) direction "Etoile Polygone" until station "Homme de Fer" (second stop). Change to tram C (yellow) direction "Esplanade". Exit at stop "Université" and walk to the physics faculty "UFR Physique et Ingénierie", 3 rue de l’Université as indicated on the map on our web site.
Another simple possibility is to walk a few hundred meters and join directly the tram C (® direction “Esplanade”) at “Alt Winmärik” and go directly to “Université”. See also “Transportation in Strasbourg*"

By plane:

The main airport is in Entzheim. In order to get to Strasbourg, take the train from the airport to main station Strasbourg and from there
proceed by tram. Take the tram A (red) to station "Homme de Fer" direction Hautepierre, change to tram C (yellow) direction "Esplanade". Exit at stop "Université" and walk to the physics faculty "UFR Physique et Ingénierie", 3 rue de l’Université as indicated on the map on our web site (30 m., left, 30 m., left, 30 m).

There is a second airport close by, Baden-Baden airport in Germany, close to Karlsruhe or Rastatt. There is a bus shuttle running to Strasbourg. For the schedule see the link http://flightliner.eberhardt-travel.de/fahrplaene.php?sp=1&pfeil=A.

By coach:

Many but not all coaches arrive at the "Place de l’Etoile". Take tram A (red) direction "Hautepierre" or tram D (green) "Rotonde" and change at station "Homme de Fer", to tram C (yellow) direction "Esplanade". Exit at stop "Université" and walk to the physics faculty "UFR Physique et Ingénierie ", 3 rue de l’Université as indicated on the map on our web site (30 m., left, 30 m., left, 30 m).

Check in:

The keys to the Gallia residence will be given to you at the registration at the UFR Physique (university), so please go there first.

Meals

Lunch will be served at the university restaurants close to the site of the Summer University. These restaurants can also be used in the evenings when there is no evening programme, see detailed programme. Tickets will be provided free of charge during the week.

Please let us know early if you are vegetarian or need special food. This is in particular important for the outings organised.

Breakfast

• Breakfast is at your own choice and charge, because we have seen in the past that habits are too divergent.

How to find the different Restaurants and Buildings of the University

An interactive Map of the Campus is available at:

Transportation in Strasbourg

Many places in Strasbourg centre and around the university can easily be reached on foot.

Weather and Outings

Normally it is still quite warm in August. So take summer clothes, but also a sweater for the evening to sit outside. We also have seen quite strong rain or thunderstorms at this time of the year, so please take something against rain.

Walk in the Vosges: This walk is not a must but very popular. If you decide to go, please bring some walking shoes in which you can walk for about 3 hours in the forest. It is not a strenuous hike, but good shoes are recommended! We will distribute maps so you can’t (???) get lost.
